Steve Jensen
b. 1955 Seattle
First generation Seattle native, Steve comes from a long line of Norwegian boat builders and fishermen, both important influences on his work. He graduated from Cornish College of the Arts and studied in the UW Master of Fine Arts program. Since then, Steve has been creating amazing, highly collected work for more than 30 years.
He works in many mediums, oil on recycled wood, carved naturally fallen cedar, large sculptures in bronze, aluminum, and stainless steel, and small cast sculptures in resin with recycled materials.
Steve has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and has been awarded numerous awards and grants, like the Morris Graves Fellowship and the PONCHO Artist of the Year Award. He has also been selected for more than 30 public art pieces in the U.S., Japan, and China.
His current body of work revolves around “The Voyage”. Steve experienced the loss of several family members and close friends in a compacted period of time. Needing a way to process his grief, he called on his Norwegian heritage and the tradition of the boat as the vehicle that transports the dead to the afterlife. The boat has become the symbol of Steve’s personal voyage and his path to healing.
You can find a boat in nearly all of his work.
